Instructions
  1. Cook the beef and onion in a large skillet over moderate heat until the beef is browned.
  2. Drain the beef and combine with the remaining ingredients except the almonds in a slow cooker.
  3. Cook covered on low until most of the liquid is absorbed, 3 to 4 hours.
  4. Alternately, cook tightly covered in a 300F (150C) oven for 2 hours.
  5. Garnish with slivered almonds.
